The new President of the European Council has issued a powerful call for "unity in diversity" among the 27 member states of the European Union. This statement emphasizes the importance of embracing cultural differences while working collaboratively towards common goals. As Europe faces various challenges, including economic disparities and political tensions, the President's message serves as a reminder of the strength found in diversity and the need for solidarity among nations. This initiative aims to foster cooperation, mutual respect, and a shared vision for a prosperous future within the EU.

The new President of the European Council, António Costa, who will officially take up his duties on 1 December, promised you, in Brussels on Friday, to work tirelessly for the unity of Europe, despite the differences of opinions and the stories and the different cultures of the 27 member states.
‘In this globalized world, the only way to be truly patriotic and ensure sovereignty is to build a common Europe. Because it is only together that we will be able to defend the security, stability, and peace on our continent. It is only together that we can achieve shared prosperity, economic growth, and the transition to climate, and hear the voice of Europe on the international stage,’ said Mr. Costa at the ceremony of the handover of power with the outgoing president, Charles Michel.
‘As the president of the European Council, I will give a mission each day to build this unit and cherish our natural diversity,’ insisted the former Prime Minister of Portugal, whose mandate will last for two and a half years, with the possibility of an extension. It is unique.
Mr. Costa also stressed the urgent need to ‘write a new chapter of the European Union as a peace project,’ becoming ‘stronger, more effective, more resilient, and more self-reliant in the field of security and defense, and always working for a transatlantic partnership strong.’
According to him, the EU needs to be a partner for ‘a future world, multilateral, sustainable, and peaceful, for a new global governance and a new global financial architecture.’.
Finally, according to Mr. Costa, prosperity must be at the heart of the European project. And advocate for the completion of the single market, the reduction of the bureaucracy, the investment in skills and innovation, and transformation opportunities and challenges in defense and energy.
‘Defend our values, strengthen our European projects of peace and prosperity, and establish the confidence of the citizens: this is the calendar that is waiting for us,’ he concluded.
The position of president of the European Council has no executive powers and mainly aims to ensure representation and coordination. It prepares and coordinates the vertices of the EU, during which leaders define the political agenda for the future of the Union.
