Morocco could become a world power of green energy (Institute).

Morocco is rapidly emerging as a global powerhouse in green energy, leveraging its abundant solar radiation and wind resources to transition from a fossil fuel-dependent economy to a sustainable energy leader. The nation aims to generate 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, with significant investments in solar and wind projects, including the NOOR Solar Complex and various wind farms. Morocco's strategic location near Europe enhances its potential as an exporter of green energy, particularly green hydrogen and ammonia, which are essential for global decarbonization efforts. The country has already been recognized as the most attractive renewable energy market for investment in the MENA region, showcasing its robust green energy ecosystem that integrates renewable resources into key economic sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing. With ongoing projects to double green power output in Western Sahara and establish a power-to-x industry, Morocco is poised to play a pivotal role in the global transition to sustainable energy.

The Institute for the Development of the Technology of Fuels and Energy, based in Moscow, has dedicated a light to the green energy sector in Morocco and assets that would enable it to become "a world power" in the matter.

"The Old Continent is heading to the big step towards a transition to renewable energy to free itself from its dependence on fossil energy sources. For Morocco, it is a good opportunity to get a foothold in one of the most coveted markets in the world, "writes the institute in an analysis entitled" Morocco will become a world power of green energy.".

For the analysis, published on its official portal, the Institute has interviewed Ghalia Mokhtari, advisor on energy policy at the Moroccan Institute of Strategic Intelligence, about the prospects of the development of the green energy sector in Morocco.

According to the expert, Morocco is well placed to establish itself as a major player in renewable energy, having regard to its geographical position and its large potential in terms of the production of energy, especially clean energy.

"It is with these factors in mind that the National Office of Electricity (ONE) announced that 19 years ago, a development plan of $3.4 billion, focused on renewable energy," said Ms. Mokhtari, noting that the Kingdom has reached a new stage in the development of clean energy in 2008, through a complete reorganization of the national system of energy production, where the solar energy will play a major role for the sides of the wind energy and hydrogen production in green.

The expert also noted that Morocco's goal is to achieve energy sovereignty by reducing 90% of the energy imported from abroad and increasing by 80% the energy produced at the local level by 2050.

"These plans should make Morocco a leader in the production of clean energy in Africa, as well as at the global level, as foreign investors show great interest in the production capacity of the country," she said, noting that the new plan for Morocco's energy should be based primarily on clean energy.

In the opinion of the expert, "The decarbonization of the industry will require significant investments, amounting to nearly $46.3 billion dollars," to finance the storage technology and transport infrastructure for renewable energy.

The various projects undertaken and commitments will contribute to providing Morocco with clean energy, as they will make the country an export power over the long term," concludes the analysis.

The Institute for the Development of the Technology of Fuels and Energy's self-assigned mission is to help energy specialists to create a realistic picture of the world's energy and information on the Russian energy sector and the world.
