Moroccan Sahara: Ecuador stresses the importance of the Initiative for Moroccan autonomy.

Ecuador has officially withdrawn its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) and expressed support for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara region. This diplomatic shift aligns with Morocco's long-term strategy to resolve the territorial dispute through a self-governance solution under Moroccan sovereignty.

The minister of foreign affairs and human mobility of the Republic of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, reiterated on Monday the decision taken by his country to suspend its recognition of the so-called "SADR," highlighting the importance of the Initiative of Autonomy for the Sahara region, presented by the Kingdom of Morocco in 2007.

During a video conference meeting with the minister of foreign affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans residing abroad, Nasser Bourita, Ms. Sommerfeld took this opportunity to reiterate the decision by the Republic of Ecuador, a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations, for the period 2023-2024, to suspend, since October 21, 2024, the recognition of the nickname "Sadr," by the universal principles of respect for sovereignty, of territorial integrity, and of non-interference in the internal affairs of other states.

In a joint statement, signed at the end of trade between the two leaders, the minister of Ecuador has also highlighted the support of Ecuador to achieve a peaceful and lasting solution to the regional dispute in the framework of the political process conducted exclusively under the auspices of the United Nations and emphasized the full support of Ecuador to the efforts undertaken by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres, and his envoy, per the relevant resolutions of the Security Council on this issue.

In this same momentum, and like the vast majority of the States members of the United Nations, the head of Ecuadorian diplomacy highlighted "the importance of the Initiative of Autonomy," presented by Morocco in 2007 for the Sahara region, in order to achieve a workable solution, pacific, based on the compromise between all parties to put an end to this regional dispute.

In this regard, the two ministers reiterated their firm commitment to continue their coordination in organizations and international forums on issues of common interest and to contribute positively to the initiatives listed on the international agenda in the service of peace, security, and development.
